EDITORIAL POLICIES

Editorial Policies And Ethics

JBI follows rigorous editorial standards to protect research integrity and support trust in biomaterials science.

Policy Overview

The Journal of Biomaterials (JBI) is committed to ethical publishing, transparent peer review, and high quality reporting. Editorial decisions are based on scientific merit, methodological rigor, and relevance to the journal scope. All submissions are evaluated without regard to author affiliation, geography, or funding source.

These policies align with widely recognized publishing standards and are designed to protect authors, reviewers, and readers. Authors are expected to comply with all ethical requirements and to provide complete, accurate disclosures.

JBI is an open access journal, and APCs are applied only after acceptance. Editorial decisions are independent of payment status or institutional affiliation.

Core Editorial Principles

01

Peer Review Integrity

Independent expert review evaluates scientific quality, data integrity, and relevance to biomaterials.

02

Ethics And Compliance

Human and animal research must include documented approvals and consent statements.

03

Conflict Transparency

All authors must disclose financial, advisory, or intellectual property conflicts.

04

Originality

Submissions must be original and not under consideration elsewhere. Plagiarism is not tolerated.

05

Data Transparency

Clear methods, reproducible results, and data availability statements are required.

06

Editorial Independence

APC status does not influence editorial decisions or peer review outcomes.

Peer Review Process

JBI uses expert peer review to evaluate scientific merit, methodological rigor, and translational relevance. Editors select reviewers with domain expertise in biomaterials design, characterization, and clinical applications. Reviewers are expected to provide constructive, confidential, and unbiased feedback.

The editorial office may request revisions or additional data to support conclusions. Final decisions are made by the handling editor or Editor in Chief based on reviewer input and journal standards.

Confidentiality And Reviewer Conduct

Reviewers must treat manuscripts as confidential and may not use unpublished data for personal advantage. All review comments should be professional, evidence based, and focused on improving scientific quality.

Editors and reviewers must disclose conflicts of interest and decline assignments where bias could be perceived. This protects fairness and maintains trust in the peer review process.

Ethics And Research Integrity

Authors must provide evidence of ethics approval for studies involving humans or animals. For clinical studies, include informed consent procedures and trial registration details when applicable. For animal work, describe welfare considerations and compliance with institutional guidelines.

Data fabrication, falsification, or manipulation is considered misconduct and will result in rejection or retraction. Image editing must be minimal and applied uniformly to all relevant data.

COPE Alignment

JBI follows best practice guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) when addressing ethical issues, corrections, or disputes.

Data Availability And Reporting Standards

Authors should provide data availability statements and deposit datasets, code, or protocols in trusted repositories whenever possible. Transparent data sharing strengthens reproducibility and supports secondary analysis in biomaterials research.

Reporting should follow relevant guidelines for study design, including clear descriptions of materials, processing parameters, and testing conditions. For computational work, provide model parameters and validation procedures.

Plagiarism And Duplicate Submission

All submissions must be original and not under consideration elsewhere. JBI may use similarity checks to identify text overlap or duplicate publication. Significant overlap without appropriate citation is grounds for rejection.

If parts of the work have appeared in preprints or conference proceedings, authors must disclose this at submission and provide clear citations. The final journal article must deliver meaningful new analysis or data.

Authorship And Contributions

All authors must have made substantial contributions to the work and approve the final manuscript. Author order should reflect contribution levels. Any changes to authorship after submission require written consent from all co authors.

Conflicts Of Interest

Authors must disclose financial relationships, advisory roles, patents, or other interests that could influence interpretation. Reviewers and editors must also recuse themselves from manuscripts where a conflict exists.

Corrections, Retractions, And Appeals

If errors are identified after publication, JBI will issue corrections or retractions as appropriate. Authors may appeal editorial decisions by providing a clear rationale and supporting evidence. Appeals are reviewed independently to ensure fairness.

Corrections are linked to the original article to preserve transparency. Retractions are issued for major reliability or ethical concerns and include a clear explanation to protect the integrity of the record.
