About the Journal of Breastfeeding Biology
From milk science and mammary physiology to clinical practice, outcomes, and public-health programs.
Mission: Advancing Breastfeeding Science and Infant Health
The Journal of Breastfeeding Biology (JBFB) (ISSN 2644-0105) is an open access, peer-reviewed platform publishing research spanning lactation biology, clinical breastfeeding practice and outcomes, and public-health policy/programs—linking milk science and mammary physiology to real-world breastfeeding support and infant health.
JBFB bridges molecular mechanisms to clinical outcomes, welcoming contributions from lactation scientists, mammary biologists, pediatricians, and public health researchers worldwide. Our commitment to open access ensures global accessibility for researchers, healthcare professionals, and public health scientists working to optimize maternal and infant health outcomes.
JBFB publishes research across four interconnected pillars that together advance the science and practice of breastfeeding:
Milk Science
Milk science, mammary physiology, bioactives, microbiome, hormones, immune factors, and nutritional biochemistry
Practice & Outcomes
Initiation/support interventions, NICU feeding, medication safety, maternal conditions, infant outcomes
Policy & Programs
Promotion strategies, workplace support, disparities, BFHI, community programs
Research Tools
Milk analysis techniques, lactation assessment tools, and improved methodologies
Mammary Gland Biology
Development, differentiation, cellular architecture, hormone-regulated morphogenesis, involution, and regenerative capacity of mammary tissue.
Milk Biosynthesis & Secretion
Molecular mechanisms of lactogenesis, milk protein synthesis, lipid droplet formation, lactose production, and cellular secretory pathways.
Milk Composition & Bioactive Components
Macronutrient profiles, micronutrient content, growth factors, hormones, enzymes, oligosaccharides, and antimicrobial peptides in human milk.
Immunological Factors
Antibodies, immune cells, cytokines, and immunomodulatory molecules transferred through milk; maternal-infant immune crosstalk.
Lactation Physiology
Hormonal regulation, neuroendocrine control, milk ejection reflex, prolactin signaling, oxytocin dynamics, and metabolic adaptations.
Clinical Practice & Interventions
Breastfeeding initiation, lactation support effectiveness, NICU feeding practices, medication safety, and maternal health conditions.
Infant Health Outcomes
Long-term developmental outcomes, nutritional programming, immune development, and health benefits of breastfeeding.
Public Health & Policy
Breastfeeding promotion, workplace support, health disparities, Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, and community programs.
JBFB maintains rigorous scientific standards through a comprehensive peer review process led by our international editorial board of experts in reproductive biology, lactation physiology, nutritional biochemistry, and developmental biology.
Expert Editorial Board
Our editorial team comprises distinguished researchers from leading institutions worldwide, bringing diverse expertise in mammary biology, endocrinology, immunology, and infant nutrition science.
Transparent Peer Review
All manuscripts undergo rigorous single-blind peer review by at least two independent experts who assess scientific validity, methodological rigor, and contribution to the field.
Quality Assurance
We employ plagiarism screening, ethical compliance verification, and statistical review to ensure published research meets the highest standards of scientific integrity.
- Rapid Publication: Efficient peer review process with a time to first decision of 21 days and acceptance to publication in 4 days, ensuring timely dissemination of your research.
- Global Visibility: Open access ensures your work is freely available worldwide, maximizing readership and citation potential across the scientific community.
- Permanent Accessibility: Accepted articles are published online immediately and assigned internationally recognized ISSN and DOI identifiers for long-term discoverability.
- Fair Review Process: Constructive, expert feedback designed to strengthen manuscripts while maintaining rigorous scientific standards.
- International Reach: Your research joins a growing archive accessible to scientists, healthcare providers, and public health professionals globally.
- No Access Barriers: Eliminating subscription paywalls ensures equitable access for researchers in all countries, particularly resource-limited settings.
JBFB welcomes submissions of the following article types: Original Research Articles, Systematic Reviews & Meta-Analyses, Review Articles & Literature Reviews, Methods & Protocols, Registered Reports, Short Communications, Data Notes, Technical Notes, Case Reports, Clinical Trial Reports, Perspectives & Commentaries, Opinion Pieces, Editorials, Letters to the Editor, Rapid Communications, Mini-Reviews, Book Reviews, Conference Proceedings, and Theses. All submissions must represent original work not previously published or under consideration elsewhere.
Authors should prepare manuscripts according to our detailed Instructions for Authors, which provide comprehensive guidance on formatting, structure, ethical requirements, and citation standards. Manuscripts must be written in clear English and include:
- Structured abstract summarizing objectives, methods, results, and conclusions
- Complete materials and methods section enabling study replication
- Clear presentation of results with appropriate statistical analysis
- Discussion contextualizing findings within existing literature
- Proper citation of prior work and acknowledgment of funding sources
- Ethics approval documentation for human subjects or animal research
Submit your manuscript through our streamlined online submission system. Include a cover letter briefly describing the significance of your findings and confirming that all authors approve submission. Manuscripts undergo editorial screening followed by peer review by anonymous expert reviewers. The average time from submission to publication is 40 days.
To sustain open access publication and maintain editorial quality, JBFB applies article processing charges (APC) to accepted manuscripts. APCs cover peer review management, copyediting, typesetting, hosting, and long-term archiving. Detailed pricing information and potential waivers for authors from low-income countries are available on our APC page.
