Organic or Psychiatric Disease? A Misdiagnosed Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome

Abstract:

Superior mesenteric artery syndrome 1234 is a rare disorder characterised by a compression of the duodenum because of the reduced angle between the aorta and superior mesenteric artery. The disease is clinically characterised by abdominal pain, lack of appetite, vomiting and anorexia; some of these symptoms also characterise eating disorders. We report a case of a young female patient presenting with abdominal pain, loss of appetite and chronic loss of weight which led to misdiagnosis of anorexia nervosa; ultrasound with echo color Doppler methodology has subsequently allowed the correct diagnosis.

Abstract:

Purpose:

To determine an appropriate time interval for conducting mass screening for glaucoma, it is important to gather information on the annual incidence rate. Thus, a retrospective cohort study was conducted to determine the annual incidence rate of visual field abnormalities (VFA) among a workplace cohort.

Methods:

In an initial visual field test using frequency doubling technology (FDT) perimetry conducted on 3443 employees (mean age 47.4 ± 8.9, men/women = 2967/476), no abnormalities were observed. Subjects were followed-up with annual perimetric testing for seven years, with VFA being determined using FDT test (FDT-VFA).

Results:

Using theKaplan–Meier method (log rank test, p < 0.001), cumulative ...

Prevalence of Campylobacter Species in Out-Patients and Pregnant Women Attending Government Clinics in Sokoto State, Nigeria

Abstract:

Campylobacter infection has been detected in poultry processors at live bird markets in Sokoto, however the prevalence of Campylobacter species in more diverse group of the population is uncertain. For this purpose, 292 human fecal swabs from patients in four Government Hospitals in Sokoto State were analyzed for Campylobacter species using culture and phenotypic typing method. The prevalence rate of 55% was revealed in the tested samples while 56% and 55% were for males and females respectively. Campylobacter jejuni, C. coli and C. lari had 20%, 40% and 40% in males and 38%, 35% and 27% in females respectively. The prevalence rates of 60%, 52%, 45%, 41% and 80%,were revealed in age range of (less than 1-6, 7-13, 14-20, 21-55 and 56-76) yrs respectively. Furthermore, 70% and 43% prevalence rates were recorded in pregnant and non-pregnant women of reproductive age respectively. There was no statistical significant association (P>0.05) between Campylobacter infec...

Maxillary Constriction with Skeletal Class II Malocclusion - A Comprehensive Treatment Approach.

Abstract:

This case report reiterates the fact that a bilateral posterior crossbite with severe skeletal class II malocclusion in the growth period could be effectively treated by a comprehensive approach with a rapid palatal expansion appliance followed by fixed appliance therapy. A 14-year-old boy presented with a severe skeletal Class II malocclusion with an orthognathic maxilla, retrognathic mandible and a high mandibular plane angle with an Angles’ Class II division 1 subdivision malocclusion with maxillary constriction, increased overjet, deep bite and severe crowding of maxillary and mandibular incisors. A banded rapid palatal expansion appliance was initially given to correct the bilateral posterior cross bite and subsequently maxillary and mandibular first premolars were extracted and Roths’ Pre adjusted edgewise appliance therapy (0.022 x 0.28-inch slot) was strapped up to correct the severe tooth size-arch length discrepancy. The patient’s soft tissue profi...

Influence of Visual Impairment on The Quality of Life: A Survey of Patients Reporting at The Low Vision Centre of the Eastern Regional Hospital Of Ghana

Abstract:

Our aim was to evaluate the influence of visual impairment on the quality of life of patients reporting at the low vision centre of the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua. The World Health Organization Quality Of Life (WHOQOL-Bref) which assesses quality of life in four main domains was administered to two hundred and ninety four (294) patients who visited the low vision centre of the Eastern Regional Hospital, for various eye services. Additional information on patient demographics and their visual acuities were obtained. The mean quality of life scores were determined for the visually and non-visually impaired. 86(29.3%) of the participants were visually impaired (presenting vision worse than 6/18). A significant difference in mean age was realized between subjects who were visually impaired (53.7 ± 18.4) (mean ± SD) and subjects who were not visually impaired (34.3 ± 13.1) (p = 0.001). The visually impaired participants had a lower quality of life scores...

Anatomical Risk Factors Associated with Immediate Extraction Placement in the Posterior Maxilla: A Human Retrospective Cone-Beam Study

Abstract:

Purpose:

The aim of the study was to analyze the spatial relationship between the sinus floor and the alveolar bone of maxillary premolars and molars in order to assess the amount of basal bone available for immediate extraction placement of endosseous implants.

Materials and Methods:

All the cone-beam computerized tomographic (CBCT) scans taken over a three-year period at four centers were identified. The subsinus bone height (SBH) was evaluated by measuring the distance between the sinus floor and the first and second premolar root apexes. The interradicular septum bone height (ISBH) of all the first and second molars was also measured, and the presence or absence of sinus-floor invagination between the molar roots was recorded.

More than 20,000 SAs were installed in 8,134 houses through OI. The RE-AIM model showed that the program had a modest reach into the target population (26.5%), and a relatively high effectiveness (63%) at preventing deaths and injuries in program houses. Adoption and implementation remained high throughout the time period. Individual level maintenance of SAs was high initially (91.8%), but rapidly declined and was only 20% after 10 years.</p> <p>Application of the RE-AIM model to evaluate this long-term SA installation program highlighted areas that warranted improvement, especially for the dimensions of Reach and individual-level Maintenance. Despite its use many clinicians have long forgotten the biochemical mechanisms that give rise to hyperlactataemia. One reason for this is because the basic science regarding lactate metabolism is taught in the early years of the medical undergraduate course, and unless one specialises in metabolic medicine, is unlikely to encounter it again. In this article we aim to elucidate the basic mechanisms of lactate metabolism and the accompanying acidosis, and illustrate various clinical settings that give rise to this biochemical abnormality.</p> </abstract>...</p> <a class="btn btn-primary blue-btn text-uppercase my-4" href="https://oap-researcharticles.org/glycomics-and-metabolism/article/lactic-acidosis-a-poorly-understood-concept-320">Read Article</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="volume-row article_text"> <div class="row text-center"> <div class="col-md-4 offset-md-5"> <nav aria-label="Page navigation"> <ul class="pagination"> <li> <a href="https://oap-researcharticles.org/all-articles?page=1" aria-label="First"> <span aria-hidden="true">First</span> </a> </li> <li> <a href="https://oap-researcharticles.org/all-articles?page=196" aria-label="Previous"> <span aria-hidden="true">Previous</span> </a> </li> <li > <a href="https://oap-researcharticles.org/all-articles?page=197"> 197 </a> </li> <li > <a href="https://oap-researcharticles.org/all-articles?page=198"> 198 </a> </li> <li class="active"> <a href="https://oap-researcharticles.org/all-articles?page=199"> 199 </a> </li> <li > <a href="https://oap-researcharticles.org/all-articles?page=200"> 200 </a> </li> <li > <a href="https://oap-researcharticles.org/all-articles?page=201"> 201 </a> </li> <li> <a href="https://oap-researcharticles.org/all-articles?page=202" aria-label="Next"> <span aria-hidden="true">Next</span> </a> </li> <li> <a href="https://oap-researcharticles.org/all-articles?page=228" aria-label="Last"> <span aria-hidden="true">Last</span> </a> </li> </ul> </nav> </div> </div> </div> </div> </main> <style type="text/css"> .child-div{ width: 600px } .parent-div{ width: 1250px;
